5 Signs That You May Have a Drainage Issue

Most of those homeowners who have recently bought a house aren’t aware of the importance of drainage issues. What look like a few annoying puddles in the yard can turn out to be a huge trouble for any homeowner. If you aren’t aware of the signs of a draining issue, here are five pointers that you need to know about:

1. Puddles That Don't Go Way

It shouldn’t amaze you when rain puddles up in your lawn on the yard. However, these very puddles can become a nightmare to you if they stay in there for a long period of time. So if you notice that those puddles which are supposed to be ‘temporary’ are sitting in for days, you should be alarmed. This is a clear sign of the drainage inefficiency.

2. Significant Erosion Against Your Foundation

If your property has foundation slab, take a close look at it. Make sure to check the flower beds as well. You have to check how high the soil is. Now will till it rains so you can take note about whether or not water filled up against the foundation and wash soil away. Also note down the period of time for which the water stood. If the water stands in the foundation, you need to fix the drainage system. It is important to know that standing water can cause extra pressure in the foundation and lead to cracking. This is extremely dangerous because it can cause the entire house to shift.

3. Puddles In Your Crawl Space

If you cringe while thinking about a crawl space, you aren’t the only one. Everybody knows that a crawl space is dark, moist and scary place that is a residence of spiders and rodents. However, what most people don’t know is that the crawl space isn’t supposed to be this way. A crawl space should be dry and remain the same way all year round. However, if it doesn’t stay dry, it is a clear sign that there is some serious issue inside that needs attention.

4. Cracking Sheetrock

When looking at a cracking sheetrock, an average Joe would think it is normal foundation settling. Sometimes, this conception comes out right but not all always. A cracking sheetrock may very well indicate that the foundation is moving. This would be due to the soil which doesn’t only get completely wet but stays that way because of inefficient drainage systems.

5. Bowing Floors

Do you see cracked or moved tiles on your property? Do you feel that the floor is popping up? If you are facing one of these scenarios, you should run a quick evaluation test on the entire floor of your property. Moving, cracking or popping tiles are usually a result of shifting homes. This is a dangerous situation which requires immediate attention.

Thus, if you see one of the above mentioned signs, you should act fast and look for better drainage solutions. You can modify surfaces located at various parts of your house or call a drainage contractor to get the job done.
